1. Seed Preparation

• Cleaning: Thoroughly rinse the seeds to eliminate any pulp residue.

• Soaking: Immerse the cleaned seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat.

2. Cold Stratification (Simulating Winter Conditions)

Cherry blossom seeds need a cold stratification period to end dormancy:

• Moisture Maintenance: Place the soaked seeds in a moist medium, such as peat moss or a damp paper towel.

• Sealing: Enclose the moist medium with seeds in a sealed plastic bag.

• Refrigeration: Keep the bag in the refrigerator at 33–41°F (0.5–5°C) for 8–12 weeks.

• Monitoring: Regularly check to ensure the medium stays moist and watch for germination signs.

3. Sowing the Seeds

• Timing: After stratification, plant the seeds in early spring.

• Soil: Use well-draining, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).

• Planting Depth: Sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep.

• Spacing: If planting multiple seeds, space them at least 6 inches apart.

• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

4. Germination and Seedling Care

• Germination Time: Seeds usually germinate in 2–8 weeks, though some may take longer.

• Light: Ensure full sun exposure for optimal growth.

• Thinning: Once seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves, thin them to avoid overcrowding.

5. Transplanting

• Timing: Transplant seedlings when they are 4–6 inches tall with several sets of leaves.

• Location: Select a site with full sun and well-draining soil.

• Spacing: Space trees at least 10–15 feet apart to accommodate their mature size.

• Watering: Water thoroughly after transplanting and maintain consistent moisture as the tree establishes.

6. Ongoing Care

• Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

• Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer designed for flowering trees.

• Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches and shape the tree.

• Pest and Disease Management: Monitor for common issues like aphids, caterpillars, and fungal diseases; treat promptly if detected.
