1. Seed Collection & Viability

• Timing: Red maple seeds ripen from late spring to early summer.

• Viability: It's best to plant seeds fresh, as they quickly lose viability if kept at room temperature. If immediate planting isn't feasible, store them in a cool, dry place to maintain viability for up to a year.

2. Stratification (Cold Treatment)

• Necessity: Fresh seeds usually don't need stratification. However, if seeds are dried or stored, stratification can enhance germination rates.

• Process:

• Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 24 hours.

• Place seeds in a moist medium (like peat moss or sand) inside a plastic bag.

• Refrigerate at 33–39°F (0.5–4°C) for 60–90 days.

• Check periodically for mold and moisture.

3. Sowing Seeds

• Soil: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix.

• Depth: Plant seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep.

• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

• Location: Place in an area with partial to full sunlight.

4. Germination & Transplanting

• Germination Time: Seeds generally germinate within a few weeks under optimal conditions.

• Transplanting: Once seedlings have a couple of true leaves, they can be moved to larger pots or directly into the ground. Ensure the outdoor planting site has well-draining soil and receives plenty of sunlight.

5. Care & Maintenance

• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.

• Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

• Protection: Shield young seedlings from pests and harsh weather conditions.
